Opening: President Dennis Mogil called the meeting to order. Doug Armstrong led the singing of God Bless America. Following the pledge, our speaker Mayor Jim Gilmore offered the thought for the day recognizing the growth in the numbers of humanity with an appreciation of Rotary, its work and fellowship.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests: Introduced by Doug were PDG Gene Erickson of the Ithaca Rotary Club and his wife Ann. We were also pleased to welcome Doug's guest Kristin Moore.

Ithaca Festival is scheduled for this weekend and Ithaca Cayuga Rotarians will be on hand for their assignment of duties on Saturday, June 21 at 9am. It is expected that the Club will be working on the Commons. Gene Erickson reported that those who worked at a booth last Saturday at the Farmers' Market did a brisk business selling Festival T-shirts and buttons in their short stint.

Interact: Pres. Dennis and AnnMarie Hautaniemi met with students at Lansing High School to answer questions and provide information about Rotary and its Interact clubs. They were assured that space would be available in the fall for meetings by Principal Michelle Stone for the newly forming group.

Bosnia Project: Chris Bragdon will be leaving this week to go to Bosnia with the goal of setting up a computer center for young people. To aid his work AnnMarie has issued a challenge to our Club to raise $375. Within short order $100 had been pledged so the rest of us have only $275 to go. Last year Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary assisted with the support of the transportation needs for the project in Bosnia. Doug has the information about donations and to whom the checks should be made.

Al Krebs, always prompt with his dues, has led the way for the Club with his check for the July-December dues already sent to Art Muka and as usual, Al has added some extra $$ for the good of the Club. Many thanks, Al.

Art Muka, Chair of the Vocational Committee, circulated a batch of letters he received from the recently graduated students of EOCES as well as from Director DiLucci expressing thanks for the several awards provided by Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary plus the Al and Jean Krebs generous supplement.

Doug called to our attention the recent passing of Sureyya Boothroyd, who was the widow of our Past President Carl Boothroyd. There will be a memorial service Wed., June 18 at Cornell's Sage Chapel with an informal gathering for friends and family in Willard Straight Hall following.

Rotary Annual Fund: Doug informed us that he has not been as aggressive this year in mentioning the Annual fund, but promises that after July 1 when he steps down as Assistant District Governor, he will be pushing once more for all members to be aiming for that $100 per year contribution. He cites Dryden Rotary as doing so well in that direction and thinks we should be able to reach a respectable level of giving once he gives us a bit of a prod.

Pass The Gavel ('Tis the season):

·   Dryden Rotary, Thurs., June 26

·   Ithaca Sunrise, Thurs., June 26 at the Royal Court Restaurant,

·   6 pm. District 7110, Mon., June 30 at the Vestal Hills Country Club, 6 pm. See Doug for reservations and rides.

50/50 conducted by AnnMarie and won by Dennis.

Program: Gene Erickson introduced our speaker Jim Gilmore, the new mayor of Cayuga Heights. Jim came to Ithaca in 1989 from Kalamazoo MI as owner and manager of radio station WTKO. He and his wife have three children and live in Cayuga Heights.

He traced a bit of the history of C.H., noting that it was incorporated as a village in 1915 and that it has had 19 mayors with Fred Marcham serving for 31 years from 1956 to 1981. The village has a budget of about $5 million and has a tradition of tight fiscal management. Jim is discovering that there are many committees helping in the administration of the entity.

The bulk of its income is devoted to police, fire department, and road maintenance. The fire dept. is greatly assisted by volunteers, many of whom are college students who get their housing at the station. He is well aware of the local deer problem and is optimistic about a solution.

Development of the Corners area is underway with a new branch building to be constructed for the Chemung Canal Trust Bank replacing the demolished service station. A new office building is to be built on the corner of Upland, Hanshaw, and Triphammer. Eight units of housing are scheduled for an area of East Upland. Cayuga Heights appears to be in sound shape with a good outlook for the near future. The public is invited to attend the Village Board meetings at Marcham Hall on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7 pm.
