Chartered November 1, 1971

Meets Tuesday Noon, Kendal at Ithaca

Editor: H. Murphy

Opening: President Dennis Mogil called the meeting to order. Doug Armstrong led the harmonious singing of Down by the Old Mill Stream. Following the pledge Doug stepped in again with the Thought for the Day, a quote from the irrepressible daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt, Alice R. Longworth: "If you have an itch, scratch it". As a post script, Doug added the observation "The highway of life is littered with flat squirrels who couldn't make up their minds".

Visiting Rotarians: Karen Besemer introduced our two visiting Rotarians, both from the Ithaca Rotary Club: Guy Tabacchi and PDG Gene Erickson. “Pass the Gavel” was conducted with the minimum of ceremony. Dennis handed the presidential gavel over to incoming president Chuck Brodhead saying that the past year had been very much a learning experience for him.

In accepting the symbol of office Chuck said he looks forward to a year of progress. Having had a year as president of Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary sometime in the misty past, he already has been through that year of the learning experience and is ready to lead us to new achievements.

Programs to Come:

·   July 15 -- Beverly Baker: Airline travel, its problems and avoiding them

·   July 22 -- Bob Wehe talking about his Rotary Polio work in India

August 5 -- Tomas Bobovsky, our exchange student from Slovakia, will report on his grand tour of a couple of dozen U.S. states with a bus load of other District 7170 exchange students. This will be his swan song visit to our club as he prepares to return home after his year in Lansing.

Happy Birthday Was Sung to: Chuckie Brodhead and Evie Morse.

50/50 was conducted by Alan Littlefair with Hank Murphy holding the winning ticket.

Happy/Sad $$: AnnMarie was sad to have been late but happy to have made 1t in time for the Passing the Gavel. Ev Morse was happy to have received a DVD from PBS of his wife June's appearance on last week's History Detectives program. We all may get a chance to view it at a future meeting. Chuck was happy to be enjoying a visit here with his daughter and her children before they all go to Maine for a vacation. Jim Shreve paid beaucoups $$ for his past sins. Doug's $ was for the appearance in his window box of a dove and her nest with a couple of eggs and who accepted Doug's watering the adjacent flowers without complaint.

Ed Moy also had beaucoups $$ for a great trip to visit family on the west coast with bonus trip by ship with two grandsons to Alaska. All went smoothly until the flight home via Dulles airport where they met a snag including the loss of Ed's luggage which did make it to Ithaca 24 hours after his arrival home. Gene Erickson was happy to have invited Bev Baker to talk next week about airline problems today.

Ed Siemon, once seated by Fred Kahn at the airport, heard him admit to being the cause of their delay. Ed was happy to have the back of his house painted. Art Muka was happy to see the mailer that Ed S. had sent out to all Lansing parents concerning our Youth Exchange Program inviting them to host our next student who is coming from Bolivia and to invite students to apply for overseas exchange opportunity. Hank was happy to see the report of the naming of the Boynton Junior High library after Chuck's late wife Phyllis who served as its librarian for over thirty years and steered it into the computer age.

Bosnia Youth Computer Center project contributions to S.E.E.D. totaled with $325 contributed by Club members and $50 from our treasury. Well done thanks to our always generous members.

GOOGLE and its effect on learning and research came under discussion and was related to Plato's concern in 500 BC that the new form of communication, writing, would be the end of learning; a concern expressed again when Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1456. And so it goes.
