Editor: H. Murphy

Opening: President Chuck Brodhead called the meeting to order and asked Guy Tabacchi to lead the singing of Winter Wonderland, which the Club managed in surprisingly good fashion, completing all the several verses, which brought a smile to all. Under Guy's guidance, we seem to be making progress in our weekly song making. Following the pledge, Chuck offered the days Thought in Dave Thurston's absence; "Worrying is like a rocking chair; it's something to do but gets you nowhere."

Visiting Rotarians and Guests: Doug Armstrong introduced Guy Tabacchi and PDG Gene Erickson of the Ithaca Rotary Club and Linda Confer of the Watkins Glen Rotary.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing at the Cayuga Mall P & C this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12 and 13. See schedule below. There are still slots open for bell ringers on Sat. from 6 to 8 PM. Call Ev Morse, 257-1685, if you can fill these openings.

AnnMarie has arranged for a musical program with a chance for all to join in on the carols. The feature of the evening will be the presentation of the Kirk Shreve Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service in the Lansing area to Karen and Dan Veaner. It promises to be a festive event. Gather at 5:30 PM for food and song and socializing, with the program at 6:30 PM. Tues. Dec. 16. Remember no noon meeting Dec. 16, Dec. 23, and Dec. 30.

Dues for Jan.-June 2009 are now being collected by treasurer Ed Siemon. Please get your check for $75.00 to him at 119 Simsbury Dr., Ithaca 14850. Make check payable to Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary.

50/50 was conducted by Alan Littlefair with Linda Confer holding the winning number for the second time; a lucky Rotarian.

HAPPY/ SAD $ $ :.Doug Armstrong was happy to have spent time with his family in Taos, New Mexico with some golf in balmy 68 degree weather but sad to have missed meetings here. Alan paid for a missed meeting. Ed Siemon was sad that he did not have any fruitcakes available as they all went off with his wife in the trunk of the car. Guy Tabacchi was happy that his wife's students in Cornell’s Hotel School were getting multiple job offers, often for overseas opportunities.

Gene Erickson was happy to be joining his wife in the annual family ritual of making Lefse, that Norwegian treat, the recipe for which may date back to Viking times. In praise of it, both Ann and Gene's cars are designated LEFSE 1 and LEFSE 2 on their license plates. Bill McGuire was happy to not yet have been snowed in. Dewey Neild was happy to get to our meeting and. delighted with the great sale of the calendars by our club. Linda Confer was happy her husband has pitched in and done so many of the chores at home while she is temporarily working in Ithaca.

Program: Chuck Brodhead introduced our speaker Dave Stoyell who is the Aging Services Specialist at the Tompkins County Office for the Aging (COFA). Dave outlined the many services offered by his office and noted the various agencies with which they have contracts such as Foodnet, Gadabout, Lifelong, Longview, Long Term Care Services, Women's Opportunity Center, Southside Community Center.

He had a number of handouts further explaining COFA’s varied services. A short program of classes on Mar. 30 and 31 for those caring for someone with a chronic illness was noted.. Much of the COFA information is available on-line: www.tompkins-co.org/cofa  Dave pointed out the caregiver classes as an aid in helping caregivers taking care of themselves so that they do not burn out with their responsibilities.

The long term care insurance brochure indicates this as a way to take responsibility for the future. CUFA helps with monthly workshops on the topic plus one-on-one counseling. The current location of COFA in the basement of the courthouse is not readily accessible to seniors and the possibility of joining with Lifelong’s facilities is being considered. Their services are numerous and COFA information is readily available to all seniors.

Our First Exchange Student Tina Prieto who was hosted by Chuck's family back in the early 1970's sent Chuck a Christmas card and announced she is about to become a grandmother. Tina's family hosted AnnMarie when she was an exchange student in the Philippines later in the 70's.

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
