What is Rotary?

Rotary is an international humanitarian service organization. Rotarians are business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and resources to help others in their local communities and throughout the world.

Rotary International comprises over 1 million members from over 25,000 Rotary clubs in 173 nations and geographical areas throughout the world. Rotary is the world's oldest service organization, founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney who wanted to encourage among his business acquaintances the fellowship he had known in his boyhood days in a small town in Vermont.

Service and fellowship are the hallmarks of Rotary and Rotarians Worldwide. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self."

Rotarians must accept and practice the "FOUR-WAY TEST" of the things they think, say, or do:

Upcoming Programs & Events

  • April 22 - Linnett Short from Tompkins County Solid Waste will talk on "How can we reduce the garbage that we throw away.''

  • April 26 - Highway cleanup with Cornell Rotaract and East Hill Flying Club. Meet in the Ramada Inn parking lot at 9:00 AM. This will be our first highway cleanup with our new partners the East Hill Flying Club.

  • April 26 - GSE Team from District 3740 in South Korea arrives in the District for their month long tour of the area.

  • April 29 - ANNUAL CHICKEN BBQ - 5:00-7:30PM, Lansing High School cafeteria.

   Martine Eimer Ambassadorial Scholar - Guest Speaker - April 8

Martine Eimer is a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Germany studying International Law at Cornell.


   Melissa Doak - GSE Team Member - April 8

Melissa Doak (left) was introduced by Club Secretary Doug Armstrong (right). Melissa is a Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) team member leaving for South Korea. Melissa is sponsored by our Club. While in South Korea the team will visit other Rotary districts and clubs, and various businesses. GSE is another of Rotary International's activities to have people of other nations get to know each other on a personal, one-to-one basis.

   Clara Barrett - Guest Speaker - March 11

AnnMarie (left) introduced Clara Barrett (right) of Lansing All Saints Church who talked about the rising food costs that have forced Haiti's poor to resort to eating dirt. Clara learned that Vita Food could supply vacuum sealed packets of dried rice and soy protein that would tolerate Haiti's heat and humidity. For every $1.00, these packets serve 34 meals (~$0.03 per meal).

Clara is raising money through the children's education classes of All Saints to send food packets to Haiti. Contributions may be made by check payable to "All Saints" with a memo line note "Haiti Fund" and sent to the church at 347 Ridge Rd. Lansing 14882.

   Reenie Sandsted - Guest Speaker - Feb. 19

Reenie Sandsted gives a presentation about the recent progress of project the Methodist Church has been undertaking to assist with the development of a village school and its surrounding grounds in Benique, Haiti. See the Feb. 19 issue of the VISTA and the Feb. 15 issue of the Lansing Star Online for more details.

   Julie Crowley - Guest Speaker - Feb. 12

Julie Crowley, owner of Triphammer Liquor and the Ithaca Coffee Company, talks about taking over a long standing family business and expanding it. Chuck Brodhead was a hockey referee when Julie was on zipping around the rink for the hockey team. See the Feb. 12 issue of the VISTA for more details.

   YEP Activities

   March 1 - YEP St. Patrick's Day Parade in Binghamton

St. Patrick's Day Parade in Binghamton. March 1 (not 17th) was a cold breeze day. 22 YEP students fly their county's colors.
After the parade a pizza lunch/dinner in downtown Binghamton, a helping hand back onto the bus. A photo-op at the Park & Ride lot.

   Dec. 27-28 - Tomas visits with his Area Advisors, Dick & Mary Breuninger in Oneonta

Tomas has an Over Night with Dick & Mary Breuninger, District Area Advisors for Slovakia & Germany, and the YEP student from Germany. Tomas finds the trip back to Ithaca much more scenic than the car ride to Oneonta the previous day in the freezing rain and snow.
