Member Introduction: Rob Mackenzie
Sponsored by Paul Steiger and Rich Spingarn
Dr. Rob Mackenzie is the new CEO of the Cayuga Medical
Center of Ithaca. Dr. Mackenzie was selected as successor
to Rotarian Bonnie Howell primarily because of his
vision for what health care should be like for this
community and for his a pursuit of perfection demonstrated
in his surgical practice. Dr. Mackenzie's goal is
to move the Cayuga Medical team from good to great
by treating every patient, every family, every employee,
every physician as if they are in that moment our
highest priority.
|
 |
Dr.
Mackenzie graduated from Harvard in 1975 and attended
Albany Medical College for his medical degree. He completed
his residency and surgical internship in Toronto General
where he was named chief surgical resident. After completing
his residency in 1984, Dr. Mackenzie moved to Ithaca
and joined the Surgical Associates. He was voted in
as President of the Finger Lakes Medical Associates
in 1991, and in 1993 became the Vice President of Medical
Affairs.
Please take a moment to personally welcome our newest
Rotarian, Dr. Rob Mackenzie!

- Russ
Sprague reported in on the current activities of his
family. They have recently "downsized" by selling their
house and are traveling all over the country in the mobile
home. They've reached all the corners of the country, and
are now going to check out some of the interior.
- George
Gull was happy to say that he is donating $2 for every
Power Play goal scored this year in Cornell Hockey, which
will help support the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance. For
more info on this organization, check out their website
at www.ibca.net.
- Mary
Kane Trochim
sang an invitation for us to see Joel Grey for an intimate
evening of conversation, music and Q&A on May 10 at 8 pm
at Ithaca College Ford Hall. Call 273-4497 for tickets,
which will support the annual fundraising for the Hangar
Theatre.
- Charlie
Trautman announced that May is "Discovery Month" on
the Discovery Trail and they are featuring a treasure hunt.
Check out www.discoverytrail.net
to learn more about the event and how you can win some great
prizes!
- Gale
Flinn was happy that tax season is over and that she
planned to take a nap today!
- Mike
Katz announced that the Sciencenter of Ithaca
is raffling fundraising tickets for chances to win
a Segway! Mike also brought a Segway to the meeting,
and a few lucky members had the chance to ride it!
(Your roving editor invoked his special press pass,
and reports that is was very, very cool.) The drawing
is being held on June 27, and tickets are $20 each
or 6 for $100. To purchase tickets, visit the Sciencenter
or contact Mike Katz at (607) 272-0600, ext. 18 or
e-mail Mike at mkatz@sciencenter.org.
Check out their website to learn more at www.sciencenter.org.
- Dale
Flinn was $20 happy today because he wanted to
express his sincere thanks to the entire Cornell Hockey
team. Dale's and his wife's true love of the sport
has been so valuable to their lives. He recognized
that it's not just about the hockey, but about the
experiences they have had together and the places
they've been traveling around over the past 15 years
following the hockey team.

"A Recap on the Cornell Hockey's Season"
|
|
Mike
Schafer, head coach of the Cornell men's varsity hockey team
|
 |
Coach
Schafer spoke with the club about the team's season
and recent experience at the NCAA Frozen Four. This
has been an exceptional year for the team where the
team was able to live their vision of success on the
ice, in the class room, and around the community. Schafer
had an excellent team to work with this year, and he
not only helped to develop their performance in hockey,
but he also strongly encourages the players to get truly
involved through volunteering in the community.
The
Cornell Hockey athletes put in a great deal of effort
this year and worked hard through each of their official
breaks from Cornell. Not only did they play their way
to Frozen Four, they also kept high standards with their
academics and remained active in volunteerism.
About
the Speaker: Mike Schafer graduated from Cornell University
in 1986 with a degree in business management and marketing.
He was a four year letterman for the hockey team, captain
for two years, and led the team to a ECAC championship
and a No. 5 national ranking his senior year. Schafer
has been an assistant coach at Cornell and Western Michigan,
and returned to Cornell as head coach in 1995. He was
awarded the 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference
Coach of the Year after winning 126 games while at Cornell.
Schafer and his wife, Diane, have two sons, Luke and
John, and a daughter, Michelle.
