  • Frank Collins to be Vice-President of Rotary International
President-Elect Jonathan Majiyagbe has appointed Frank C. Collins, Jr. as Vice-President of Rotary International for 2003-4. Frank is a member of the Rotary Club of East Hartford, Connecticut USA in District 7890 and is a stalwart faculty member and Chair of the Faculty Training Committee of the RLI. The Rotarians of Zones 31-32 are justly proud to have our Director as Vice-President for the next Rotary year. We know he will serve all of Rotary with his usual skill and dedication. Frank is also our club’s Zone Director, and many of our members have met him.

  • Pres. Jean specially thanked V. Pres. Jeff True for chairing last week’s meeting. She also thanked Beverly Baker and Mike McGreevey for their enormous help in starting the Ithaca College Rotaract Club. The Rotaract Chartering Ceremony last week was a memorable and historical meeting for our club.

  • President’s Report from Ithaca Rotary Board Meeting

+ The Board decided to reintroduce the weekly card drawing/fundraiser with a minimum pot of $100. We’ll keep drawing each week until the lucky winner pulls the magic card!

+ We plan to enter our “Share The Warmth” project for the District’s Helping Hands award this year. Pres. Jean will need some help getting the display together for the District Conference, so if any ideas, photos, copies of articles, and would like to help, please contact Pres. Jean.

+ The Community Service Committee presented a plan to the Board regarding DARE funds for this year. Since the Ithaca Police Department was unable to participate in the DARE program this year due to one of the officers being pregnant, others had some injuries, and short staffing. So, we did not give the Police Department the typical $5,000 this year, and there are also some funds remaining from previous years.

The committee called all the schools previously involved in DARE and received excellent reports on the program. There was unanimous support for the program and unanimous acclaim for the work the Police officers are doing in the schools.

Therefore, the Committee’s suggestion was to use the available $5,000 in the following ways: (1) Present $1,000 to the Police Department to be used to pay for recertification of DARE officers so that they will be able to continue with the program. (2) Designate $2,000 to increase the amount of funds available for the Community Grants this year. There have been many excellent grant requests and this plan will allow us to increase both the amount and the number of grants. Some of these funds will be used to support children’s programs in our community. (3) The final $2,000 is to be used at the Board’s discretion, which will be discussing further in May and June.

+ The GSE team from West Africa will be with our club from May 10-14. We still haven’t received final word on if they will all be able to come because of the problems in getting visas, but we’ll let you know ASAP.
  • Word of the Day: antepenult, a noun, meaning the third syllable from the end of a word. An example is “te” in antepenult.

  • Matthew Dearing was happy because of the valuable services provided by the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and the Ithaca Downtown Partnership, which continually give him confidence in doing business in the area.
  • John Ziegler had a good time transporting the exchange students when he listed to some of their favorite music. They also helped him figure out how to work his CD player!
  • John Bailey was happy about the new Rotaract Club at Ithaca College as it will be a valuable addition to this community.
  • Steve Froehlich was happy to have had an enjoyable trip with his wife visiting Nepal and Cambodia, where he had the privilege to teach Nepali Christian pastors at a conference. He also managed to find a Rotary Club in the area!

"Tompkins County Beautification Program"

Chrys Gardener

Tompkins County recently instituted an important program that will bring additional beauty to our community, which is already set in such a wonderful natural environment. Chrys Gardener is now heading up the Tompkins County Community Beautification Program, and is actively making strong connections between local organizations such as Cornell Cooperative Extension, Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Ithaca Downtown Partnership.

With a degree in horticulture and many years of professional gardening experience, Chrys has a true green thumb as a master gardener. (It’s not known if she actually changed her last name to perfectly match her profession!) Chrys presented information and examples of what community beautification is, why it is important, and what it can do for our county.

This program is a volunteer-led process to add beauty to residential areas, business districts, and other community spaces, through landscape plantings, hanging baskets, window boxes, benches, signs, and sculpture. Chrys will be tapping the many volunteer organizations at both Cornell and Ithaca College, and local businesses are already being requested to partner with Chrys in bringing new landscaping to Downtown Ithaca.

Community beautification is a vital service for our area for many reasons, including reduction of crime and vandalism, attracting new businesses and residents, improving tourists’ and visitors’ experiences, and improving the quality of life. This program will help others bring beauty to the landscape with matching grants, consultation services, and hosting educational workshops.

Keep an eye out for beautified areas in the county! For more information, contact Chrys Gardener at 607-272-2292 or cab69@cornell.edu.
