- Meeting Location Reminder
Reminder that on Aug. 27, we will be having an out-of-room experience as we
will be meeting at Stewart Park instead of the Holiday Inn. The lunch prices will remain the same - $8.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members and guests - however children will be welcome for half price - $5.00. Reservations will be requested soon, so please mark your calendars and plan ahead for any guests you may wish to invite. Terry Harbin will be our guest speaker, telling us all about how "They Made Movies in Ithaca." There will also be an ice cream social to follow, with members of the Red Badge Society doing the serving. We will meet in the large pavilion at the park, rain or shine and we hope to see you all there!
- Next Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Ithaca Rotary Club's Board of Directors will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Board room. All members are welcome to attend and the meeting counts as a make-up for those of you a little short on attendance.
- The Membership Committee will meet on Wed. Aug. 20 right after the regular club meeting. Anyone interested in working on membership development and retention is welcome to attend. Talk to Heidi Goldstein if you have any questions.
- UN Day in New York City
Our district is planning a group trip to United Nations Day in New York City on October 3 and 4. This will be an overnight trip and interested Rotarians should visit the district web site as soon as possible for details (www.district7170.org). Last year our district was honored at this event for our participation in the Wheelchair Project and we are looking for good attendance from our district for this year's event as well. Rotary's Polio Eradication Project works with and through the United Nations and is also an integral part of this day of celebration. Check it out!

- Rotarians in Action
President Jeff (hereafter known as PJ for editorial purposes) mentioned several Rotarians in Action over the last couple of weeks. Bill Rusen appeared in the Ithaca Times as they printed an article on his latest ground-breaking ceremony. Real Estate Magazine published an article on our own Audrey Edelman. Past President Jean (PPJ, ditto) will be the speaker at the Enterprising Women's meeting tomorrow, Aug. 14. Finally, Larry Baum and The Computing Center will celebrate their 25th Anniversary by hosting the Chamber's Business After Hours this evening. Congratulations to our fellow Rotarians on these wonderful accomplishments!

- Guy Tabacci (host) one for not having to pay $17 for lunch here as he did at a recent Rotary club meeting in California (although he assures us that the buffet was a bit more elegant for that price!) and one - not seriously of course - for the weather.
- Barbara Thuesen one for guest Gigi Simo who just completed her ballet teacher certification, and 71 for having made it this far!
- Heidi Goldstein one to welcome member Kelly Damm back for her first meeting after being involved in a serious automobile accident.
- Gene Erickson one for celebrating his and Anne's 50th wedding anniversary at a huge gathering of family and friends in Minnesota.
- Becky Bilderback one for her son who has just moved to Rochester after living in Seattle for several years. Of course, being closer does have its downside as well, but she didn't really need all that furniture anyway!
- Susan Blumenthal one for the Rotary-sponsored flower planters that have been place in the triangle at the intersection of State and Mitchell streets. Our club's contribution to this portion of the city's beautification project.
- Peggy Haine one for running into PJ at the Trumansburg Rotary club meeting recently. The T-burg club is currently meeting every other Thursday at the Old Post Office, a new restaurant in T-burg. Check it out some evening and earn a make-up for attending!
- Kelly Damm one for her leave of absence being over and being able to get back to the meeting, and one for being a Beloit grad (you had to hear PJ's opening comments).
- Jack Carpenter one each for our presidents - PPJ's compassion and PJ's snoring on a recent trip to Tamagami in Canada (a mutual sharing apparently!).
- Jeff True - one for his snoring skills, or was it for Jack's snoring skills? Whatever.

"Historic Ithaca"
|
|
Scott Whitham and Janet Schur, Historic Ithaca
|
| Our guest speakers today were Scott Whitham, Director of Historic Ithaca, and Janet Schur, also of Historic Ithaca. Scott and Janet gave us a look at the historic aspects of downtown Ithaca as well as other communities throughout the region. Their reach has enabled the restoration and recent sale of the West Dryden Church and will enable the Three Bears historic building complex in Ovid to transform from county office space into more suitable tenants. Of course, the most obvious project of Historic Ithaca of late has been the State Theatre. Scott let us know that the improvements and restoration work is continuing and that Historic Ithaca has decided to undertake management of the facility on its own. Anyone who keeps an eye on the arts scene in Ithaca will know that the theatre has been keeping busy and there are some really great events in the near future to watch for as well.
Janet filled us in on a possible national historic district designation for a portion of downtown Ithaca, primarily along and around the Commons. Unlike state or local historic designations, the national designation places no limits on the property owners in terms of what they can do to their buildings. The important value of this program though, is that it provides valuable tax incentives to those property owners who wish to improve their properties, and it provides some very useful exemptions or adjustments in the application of building codes that will improve the access of the upper floors of some of the buildings within the proposed district. To that end, Historic Ithaca has set up a meeting between local members of the AIA, Cornell University School of Architecture, and local property owners who are interested in making improvements to their buildings, particularly to the facades of the buildings. The professionals will be offering free assistance to these property owners in getting started on their improvements. The meeting will take place on September 13, anyone interested in finding out more should contact Historic Ithaca.
Our sincere thanks to Scott and Janet for their time and for their interesting look at an important aspect of life here in Ithaca.
