  • The Ithaca Rotary Board recently approved the corrections to our updated ByLaws, and we will be holding a final vote for its official adoption on March 12.
  • Our club has accepted member resignations from Mary Agnew and John O'Connor, but we have also received two new member proposals to be posted soon.

  • Paul Harris Fellows Recognitions

Rotarians Mike Brown and Jack Carpenter were honored as our newest Paul Harris Fellows through their generous financial contributions to Rotarian educational and humanitarian efforts. These gifts have helped improve the lives of people around the world, and we thank Mike and Jack for their commitment to the Rotary Foundation!

  • President Abraham Lincoln (who masquerades the rest of the year as Rotarian Fed Antil) visited our club today to provide us with an inspirational thought for the day. We're absolutely certain Abe would have joined the first Rotary club in Chicago… if he lived to be at least 96 years old.
  • Mrs. Dorothy Wiggans thanked everyone for being such a good friend to her husband, Bob Wiggans. He loved Rotary very much throughout the many years of his dedicated service.

  • Ambassadors
2/6: Phil Meyer, Paul Steiger, Barb Caldwell (Ithaca Sunrise)
2/13: Phil Meyer, Jim Johnston, George Gull (Ithaca Sunrise)

  • Jane Spano was happy about the recent successful conversion of Savings Bank of the Finger Lakes to Niagra Bank!
  • Warren Allmon noted that today is not only Abe Lincoln's birthday, but also Charles Darwin's birthday, each occurring on the very same day in 1809.
  • Lisa Bushlow was happy to announce that Joel Grey, Cabaret's Tony Award and Academy Award winning actor, will be performing a one-man show at the Hangar's Gala on May 10. Read more about it on the web.
  • June Losurdo honored Bob Wiggans because he was a great friend to June and her family for over 30 years. She shared some special memories she had of Bob reminding us how special a man he was.
  • Phil Meyer reminded us that Cornell Hockey is currently Number 2 in the nation!
  • Kelly Damm was happy to have been able to return to Rotary after the recent trial that tied her up for the past two weeks.
  • Nancy Potter was happy to announce that a former Rotarian, Ann Matthew's, has returned to Ithaca.
  • Jack Carpenter was happy to be recovering well from a recent gall bladder surgery. He also reminded us that Cornell Wrestling is Number 7 in the nation!

"Traonach Plays Irish Music"

The club enjoyed a musical feature from local Irish musical group, Traonach, which includes our own Scott Whitham.

Traonach is the Gaelic term for the corncrake, a reclusive bird with a sweet call once common throughout Europe, Central Asia, and Northern Africa, and, of course, Ireland. The bird is described in the sixth-century Book of Kells. Modern farming developments, particularly the increased use of machine harvesters have brought the traonach to the brink of extinction.

The players included Mark Bickford, Joel Cowan, Cole Gruberth, Harry Lawless, Ed McGowan, and Scott Whitham. Check out Traonach's website to and to see a picture of the traonach bird.
