In
Rotary, the week of February 24 was World Understanding and
Peace Week. It seems very ironic that during this week, we are
on the bring of war. But, the fact that war is imminent and
likely makes the desire for peace and mutual understanding all
the greater.
I don't know how to achieve real peace in the world. I don't
know how to deal with despotism. I don't know how personally
to assess risks in far away places like North Korea and Iraq
or very close to home. However, I ask all of us to consider
what we can do to promote understanding and peace. This is a
time when all of us need to keep ourselves informed, let our
legislators know our opinions, and build personal relationships
that we hope will some day foster peace.
Today's word is 'peace'. |

- Rich
Spingarn was happy to see that Pres. Jean uses
a “good-old fashion” dictionary.
- Larry
Robinson
was happy that he and his wife recently survived a
two-day stay in an Ice Hotel in Quebec. His conclusion:
very few people need to spend two or more nights in
the Ice Hotel!
- Charlie
Trautman was happy to announce that the new Science
Center expansion has been completed and is now open!
He was also happy to recall that we are a very special
Rotary club because one of our members discovered
an element, number 85 Astatine. (Check
out #85 on the web.)
- Mary
Kane Trochim was happy for the exciting upcoming
season at the Hangar Theatre!
- Brigid
Hubberman
was happy to announce that the original art work of
the large “Read to Me” banners displayed around town
were recently auctioned.
- Warren
Allmon was happy to say that a play commissioned
by the PRI, called the "Truth about Dinosaurs",
is being presented by the traveling, educational theatre
troupe from the Hangar Theatre.

"Sex,
Smiles and Dental Floss"
Dr. Jim Orcutt |
|
Dr.
Orcutt presented the club reminders about good dental health
and reviewed many tools and techniques that we can use to
make our smiles "sexy". Yes, you have to use dental
floss… really… and those electronic toothbrushes are a good
thing.
When
picking out your toothpaste, you don’t have to worry too much
about which brand or flavor you pick, just make sure that
ADA Approval seal is on it! The organization has put that
toothpaste through very extensive testing, and has verified
that it does everything you need it to do to keep your mouth
clean and healthy.
About
the speaker: Dr. Orcutt has been practicing dentistry in Ithaca
for 33 years, and is the past president or NYS Dental Association
and involved in many national dentistry academies and organizations.
Jim is also a fisherman, bike rider, and used to participate
in triathlons, and is a hockey referee for US hockey teams!
His four sons and wife still laugh at his jokes.
