  • The next Rotary Leadership Institute will be on Saturday, March 29 at the Best Western Regency in Binghamton, NY. If you are interested in attending Parts I, II, or III, please contact Pres. Jean or Jeff True. Your registration fee will be covered by Rotary.
  • Peggy Meyer, wife of Rotarian Phil Meyer, gave a short presentation about her experiences as nurse treating young patients infected with the polio virus. She described several stories that illustrated how terrible this disease can be for those infected, and what it took to provide care. Some of her patients survived, and others didn't.

We will all soon be asked to consider our personal contribution to the Rotary PolioPlus program aimed at finally removing the polio virus from the face of the Earth. Please thoughtfully consider what you are capable of giving-every dollar of which will be effectively used to help the PolioPlus campaign succeed.

For more information, please visit the PolioPlus Program.

  • New Member Introduction: Steve Garner
    Sponsored by Jim Byrnes

Steve Garner is our club's first ever transfer Rotary member from Binghampton, NY. Although no one was able to vote for Steve, Jim Byrnes is confident that after you get to know Steve, you would have voted "yes"!

Steve has been working in the banking industry across upstate New York for many years, and recently moved to Ithaca to become the new president of the Tompkins Trust Company. Jim is particularly happy that he is in town!

Please take a moment to personally welcome Steve into Ithaca Rotary, and we look forward to getting to know him better!

  • Tony Pesco recently went in to the hospital for an angioplasty, and came out with a quadruple bypass. He is recovering very well at home, and will be taking it easy for about a month.
  • Ambassadors
1/23: Pat Baxter (Johnson City, NY)
1/28: Jessie Ripple (Dallas North, TX)
1/28: Barlow Ware, Barbara Thuesen (Ithaca-Cayuga)
1/29: Pat Baxter (Johnson City, NY)
1/30: Phil Meyer, Nancy Potter, George Gull, Mary Benetti, Paul Steiger (Ithaca Sunrise)
    1/31: Gene Erickson (Binghamton, NY)
  • Students
    Risa Takashima (Japan)
    Samuel Dricot (Belgium)
    Ariel Arandia (Bolivia)

  • Today's word is 'whistle pig', which is another term for a groundhog. Pres. Jean picked this unique term up from one of her high society Groundhog Day parties she recently attended.

  • Steve Froehlich reminisced on his first date with his wife, which was a one-man show of Moby Dick. (And she still married him.) They had a whale of a time!
  • Scott Russell was happy to announce that Bill Downing is back at Rotary!
  • David Barr said a few words in memory of the passing of Rotarian Bob Wiggans. "Wiggy" used to date Dave's sister many years ago, and he had one of the strongest hand shakes you ever felt. When Bob would come over to Dave's house to pick up his sister, Dave's father would greet Bob at the door with his hands behind his back just so he wouldn't have to shake hands!

We're going to miss you, Wiggy.
  • Chris Sanchirico announced that the Tompkins Trust Company has pledged $100 to the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance each time the Cornell Hockey team makes a power play goal.
  • Barbara Thuesen reminded us that the Reconstruction Home in Ithaca was one of the first locations for rehabilitating polio victims. When Barbara was 12 years old would tap dance for the patients at the facility!

"Cornell's Schwartz Center Sneak Preview"

This we received a peak into the exciting programs offered by the Cornell Theatre and Dance department during their 2003-2004 season. From Sophocles' 'Antigone' to John Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath', there are many reasons why you should find your way to see a Cornell production next year. Subscriptions and individual performance tickets may be purchased online or by calling 607-254-ARTS.

The Cornell Schwartz Center serves 19,000 people annually, and boasts an extensive on-site facility for professional production design, development, and performances. Ithaca is very fortunate to have many opportunities to experience great theatre, so you should take advantage of what Cornell is offering this year and next!
