  • Rotary International Theme 2003-04: “Lend a Hand”
RI President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe has selected “Lend a Hand” for next year’s theme. Majiyagbe declared his theme, calling it "simple and straightforward, expressing the natural impulse that all Rotarians feel when they come face to face with human need." Outlining his four areas of focus for the year — poverty, health, literacy, and the family of Rotary — the president- elect said, "We will Lend a Hand to alleviate poverty, educate the illiterate, and relieve the scourge of disease, and Lend a Hand of fellowship to all of the family of Rotary."

  • New Member Introduction: Don Hinman
    Sponsored by Siu-Ling Chaloemtiarana

Don joined The Veterinary College at Cornell in 1964 and retired as Director of The Biomedical Electronics Service Department in 1995. He served as Chair of The University Employee Assembly in the ‘90’s and after retirement was a consultant for a software house in Boston.

Don is very much involved in our community particularly pertaining to music. He sings with the barbershop quartet called Sound-a-Chord, Ithaca Community Chorus & Chamber Singers and has been a board member. Don is a past president and is the present treasurer of The Savage Club of Ithaca and takes part in their shows. He was involved in the visits of Children’s Choirs from Russia and Malaysia to Ithaca and the surrounding region hosting several children in his home. Don has two sons, a daughter, and one grandchild.

Please welcome Don Hinman to the Ithaca Rotary Club!
  • Remembering a Rotarian
Robert Landon Wiggans passed away on February 1, 2003. He was 84 years old.

Born in Ithaca on April 7, 1918, Bob attended Ithaca schools as well as Manlius Prep School. He graduated from Cornell in 1940, next purchasing farms in 1941 to produce hybrid seed corn. In February 1942, Bob entered the army as a second lieutenant thanks to his experience with the ROTC at Cornell, and was involved in the Custer 85th Infantry Division and fought from North Africa to Naples in the Italian Campaign. Bob was decorated with three Bronze stars and one Silver Star for heroism, and was also awarded several Purple Hearts.

After the war, Bob continued his farming enterprise by adding a dairy herd, and later ran a school for farmers in milk marketing sponsored by the Metropolitan Milk Producers Bargaining Agency.

Bob Wiggans was actively involved in this community through starting a Boy Scout Troop, being active in the Cayuga Farm Bureau, and by hosting Rotary exchange students. He also helped found the Aurora Rotary Club in 1946 along with Ithaca Rotarians. Bob also started the VFW in King Ferry in 1950, and the Southern Cayuga Garden Club in 1985. In 1986, Bob was inducted into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame for earning nine varsity letters in soccer, hockey, and lacrosse in four years.

Bob was the father of five surviving children, Patricia Gaines, George, Barbara Taylor, Richard, and Elizabeth Engelbrecht-Wiggans. He is also survived by his wife, Dorothy, nine grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Bob Wiggans was an enormous supporter of Rotary, he and his wife became proud Paul Harris Fellows. We will sorely miss this great man and great Rotarian.

  • This week’s word is ‘brevet’, meaning to promote in rank without a pay increase. Have a little fun this week, and tell someone in your office that you are promoting them today to the Brevet Executive Associate of Planning and Leadership and Finance and Manufacturing and Human Resources and Customer Service! They will be so excited for the success in their careers.

  • Russ Sprague gave some age-old words of wisdom, including “God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never really liked.”
  • Barbara Thuesen was happy because her daughter is going to be president in her Rotary Club in Georgia.
  • Will Cooke was happy to be helping with the American Cancer Society’s Marti Gras event on March 4 at the Ithaca Country Club from 6 – 10 pm.
  • Heidi Goldstein was happy because her son, Joey, is the new Educational Director at the Hangar Theatre.
  • Mike Billing was happy to report that his son, Jonathan, recently participated in a national indoor soccer championship in Kansas City, and his team won their division!

  • Janet Steiner presented a picture of Pres. Jean’s December appearance as the Rutabaga Queen at the Rutabaga Curling event at the Farmer’s Market in Ithaca.

"Club Assembly"

Today’s Club Assembly was all about getting to know your fellow Rotarians better. We started off the meeting with the shocking (!) requirement of assigned tables to force the few of us who always tend to sit at the same table every week.

We were entertained with two singing features: “Summertime” by the Rotary quartet of Siu-ling Chaloemtiarana, Jack Burns, Scott Russell, and our newest member Don Hinman. Next, the entire Club sang “Getting to Know You” with a special second verse, “Getting to Snow You” adapted by Rotarian Mike Billing.

Each table then took a group survey to learn more about each other. We discovered amazing facts of who has sailed across the ocean, who has played in a band, and who has danced the Chicken… in public. One table also learned that Rotarian Tony Pesco was HOT in 1958!
