- New Mailing List in Development
Please note that requests for changes and updates to this mailing list have been received and will be accommodated as soon as possible. Clarity Connect has informed us that their new system should be up and running by the end of the week of July 14. Once the change-over there has been completed, we will be able to make all of the changes, corrections and adjustments to the mailing list that are needed ourselves rather than using the auto-subscribe or having someone at Clarity handle them manually. Thank you for you patience.
- End of "The Thingy"
The final round of the game with no name was played today, with tickets and cards being drawn until the bitter end. With $259 in the pot and 33 cards left, the Queen of Hearts remained as elusive as she could be. On her second trip to the podium, Mary-Lynn Cummings was finally able to coax the Queen out of her hiding place with only four cards left! Congratulations to Mary-Lynn!
- District Governor Official Visit
Next week, our District Governor Perry Berkowitz will be making his official visit to our club. Officers and Directors of the club are asked to attend a special meeting with Perry at 11:00 in the conference room behind Max's at the Holiday Inn.
- Ithaca Rotary Board Meeting
The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, July 15, 5:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce offices on East Shore Drive. Members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
- New Meeting Location Next Week!
On July 16, our meeting will take place at the Lake Source Cooling facility on East Shore Drive. Sign-ups for the bag lunch from Wegman's will be available at next week's meeting. If you are planning to attend and will not be at the July 9 meeting, please contact Jeff True or Beverly Baker ASAP to sign up. Even if you are not planning to eat, you should be sure Jeff or Beverly know you are planning to attend so they have some idea of how many people to expect. Parking is across the street at the marina, though you are encouraged also to use the Chamber parking lot and car pool from there as parking at the marina is somewhat limited. Hope to see you there!
- Grant to Support RI 100th Year!
Pres. Jeff announced that our club just received a letter from the Triad Foundation, informing us that we were the recipients of a $2,500 grant to help celebrate our club's 90th birthday and the 100th birthday of Rotary International. Our club will use this money to help plant at least 100 trees along Route 89 in the area around Cass Park as our contribution to the Centennial Celebration of Rotary in 2005. Past-President Jean was called forward, yet again, to receive due thanks and congratulations as she was the author of the grant application. Thank you, Jean!
- Ithaca Rotary Blood Drive Report
Dick Page gave a final report on the blood drive at the Holiday Inn last Saturday. With only 25 reservations, things did not look too good coming in. Sue Munson and her son took things into their own hands and scoured the Commons for more donors. In the end, 47 donors were on hand to share the gift of life. Many thanks to all the contributors and to all of the Rotarians who helped out with the logistics of the day.

- New Members Introduction: Dalene Covert, sponsored by David Cook
David Cook introduced our newest Rotarian, Dalene Covert who is the Director of Sales at the Holiday Inn. She grew up in Watkins Glen and graduated from Corning Community College with and Associates Degree in Business Administration. Since then, she has been in the hotel business for 15 years, six of those with Hart Hotels, the current owner of the Holiday Inn. Dalene is also an LPN and has four children, Brian (12), Eric (10), and twins Roberta and Amanda (2). When she has a spare moment or two, Dalene continues to work on her education, studying for the Certified Hotel Administrator Certificate.
- Rotarians In Action
Congratulations to Chuck Bartosch for re-election as President of the Ithaca City School Board and to Cal Organ for election to the Trumansburg School Board. Also, in the June 27 issue of the Ithaca Journal, an article about local aviatrixes included a number of our members or their spouses - Billie Johnson, Marion Cutting, Connie Cook, Loralyn Light, Beverly Baker, Joan Portzline, and Terry Byrnes.
- Ithaca Rotary Awards thanks to our Members!
Our club was the recipient of several certificates and awards at the recent District 7170 Pass the Gavel dinner in Binghamton. A certificate for the Helping Hands award, for average gift per Rotarian to the Polio Eradication campaign, and for our overall contribution to the Polio Eradication campaign (nearly $51,000!) Past President Jean was on hand to receive these certificates and to present a certificate of her own to Dave Dunlop for his service this past year on the Polio Eradication campaign in our club. Congratulations to Dave and to everyone in the club who participated in this extra-special program.

New Happy Dollar Policy
If your happy dollars are for personal reasons, you may put in $1.00 (or more as you wish), but those who are making an announcement, either of an event or of a more commercial nature, are asked to contribute at least $3.00.
- Don Hinman (host) one for finishing his lawn mowing this morning!
- Bettsie Park one from Ken Jupiter to say Happy Birthday to Brian Wilbur!
- Ross Lynch five to announce the upcoming Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, N.Y.
- Robin Korherr one for completing her MBA at Ithaca College, one for being able to cope with change - a new job as the Confidential Assistant to Sheriff Peter Meskill, and one for being endorsed by the Democratic Party for the 5th Ward Common Council seat.
- Dave Barr five for Barlow Ware who, despite his whistling skills, has been chosen for the Cornell University Athletics Hall of Fame under the category of - you should have guessed it - Athletic Supporter!
- Joanne Florino two for Presidential torture - one to note that none of the aviatrixes in the Journal article had ever had to crash-land in a corn field because they forgot to check the gas tank before taking off, and one to remind Jeff that notes are being taken for next year's Pass the Gavel celebration and starting one's reign with mysoginist humor was not the best of beginnings!
- Bridgid Hubberman one for her son Jeffrey who made the Empire State Games baseball team!
- Barry Rothfeld (or Rosenthal or Rothschild, whichever you prefer) one for daughter Sherry's graduation from college, one for the fact that she has a job in New York City, and one for officially becoming empty-nesters!
- Dale Flinn one for spending a week at hockey camp in Lake Placid last month, one for his daughter who became inspired this past semester and finished with a 4.0 at SUNY Oswego, one for the GSE Team from West Africa who all made it home safely, one for a post card from team member Yawa from Togo, and one just because.
- Simonetta Antenucci one for her son Ryan who finally has passed high school!
- Peggy Haine one in celebration of her step-daughter Rebecca who finished her medical residency and is off to New Mexico to practice on a Zuni reservation.

"Weird & Wacky Patents"
|
|
Ithaca Rotarian Mike Brown
|
| On somewhat short notice, our own Mike Brown was ready, willing, and able to fill in as our guest speaker today, our regularly scheduled speaker having to cancel at the last moment. As always, Mike's review of weird and wacky patents was fascinating, humorous, and at times, well, weird. While there are many thousands of useful patents that have been granted over the years - Edison's phonograph for instance - there are clearly a few thousand too many that maybe should have been overlooked. Of course, it's all dependent upon one's own perspective. Certainly some people would find the toe-mounted soap scoop, for picking up dropped bars of soap in the shower, more than just a gimic. Few women would argue that a toilet targeting system for men is entirely without merit, nor perhaps the toilet night light system. However, a large statue of a brass monkey with two metal balls inside that fall out when the temperature gets too cold (you figure it out!) might begin to stretch even the most utilitarian of minds.
Once again, Mike has shown us all that just when you think things can't get any weirder, someone comes along to patent it!
Thank you to Mike for his wonderful sense of humor, his fascinating talk, and his ability to fill in at a moment's notice. Mike speaks at many Rotary clubs throughout New York and if you missed this presentation, be sure to catch him at a Rotary club near you!
