  • Rotarians are Great Golfers!
Scott Russell and Paul Grennell recently participated in the Annual District 7170 Golf Tournament in Whitney Point and won! Scott shared with us the District Governor's Cup, the trophy which will be spending the year with us thanks to Scott and Paul. Congratulations to both of you!
  • Rotarian Awards
President Jeff presented Perri LoPinto and Gene Erickson with two plaques which were presented to our club at the District Pass the Gavel Dinner in June. Our club finished well in the total amount given and in the per capita giving to the Polio Eradication Campaign. Many thanks to Perri and Gene for an excellent job!
  • Special Thanks from Pres. Jeff
President Jeff also presented two "Lend A Hand" theme banners to club members for their recent contributions to the club. First to Will Cooke for hosting the Roast, er, Pass the Gavel event for our club recently and to Nancy Rosen for her hard work the past two years as the Chair of the Program Committee. Nancy has arranged for all of the monthly program chairs and made sure that they had all the support that they needed in order to bring us the wonderful programs we have each week. Thank you Will and Nancy!
  • RI Convention Report
Dave Flinn gave a brief report on his recent trip to the Rotary International Convention in Brisbane, Australia. As all such RI conventions go, it was a lot of fun and a lot of fellowship. Dave also brought back a bag full of gifts for our president and our club including a stuffed koala bear (although I believe the board's EXACT instructions were to bring back a cuddly, friendly, LIVE, koala bear), and a Rotary Object, the story of which will have to come from Dave or President Jeff.
  • To Covet the Badge of Past President
Past President Jean McPheeters walked her way to the podium yet again, wearing almost regulation footwear finally, to receive the second-most coveted award in the history of a Rotary club, a new name badge bearing the title of Past President. The first-most coveted award in the history of a Rotary club is, of course, the Past President's lapel pin which was bestowed upon PP Jean during the Pass the Gavel Extravaganza (video tapes still available, see Bev Baker).
  • Rotary Special Guest
Janet Miller, a native Ithacan and former Rotary Youth Exchange Program participant, was a Cultural and Educational Attache in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina for two years. She is the daughter of Bob Miller, former owner of the Erie J. Miller car dealership in Ithaca. Janet gave us a brief glimpse of some of her responsibilities and experiences in Bosnia. Her stories were all the more poignant as the events of 9/11 unfolded in the midst of her term. She also related a story with direct Rotary connections as, while searching for a tenor for an important concert performance in Bosnia, she was lead to Ithaca College and to David Park, husband of our own Loralyn Light. Our thanks to Janet for a very interesting talk and we are hoping to have her back again sometime to share more of her experiences.

"Leadership in Stressful Times"

Michelle Courtney

Millie Clarke-Maynard introduced our guest for today, Michelle Courtney Berry. Michelle's list of accomplishments and current interests/responsibilities/involvements would take up this entire section with no room for comment upon her excellent presentation. Suffice to say that Michelle is an author, playwrite, artist, actor, poet, consultant, healer, motivational speaker, trainer, and active community member. Her latest endeavor is to enter the realm of Ithaca politics by running for Common Council as a Representative of the 2nd Ward.

Michelle shared with us the history of her life and her family as a prelude to her primary focus today, dealing with stress. After a history of stress in her family and personal life, Michelle was able in a both humorous and touching way to help us all to deal with our own stresses in daily life. Perhaps one of her most revealing segments dealt with the relationships that we all form in our work place. Too many of us feel the need to form personal relationships with the people we work with, often times neglecting or avoiding the important relationships we should be working on with our real friends and our families. It is not necessary to even "like" the people that you work with, only that you get along with them and, with great emphasis, learn to have mutual respect.

Other ideas included making a very short list of things to do each day - two or three - and just doing them. Long to-do lists only lead to more stress as they seldom get finished and then get added to the next day's list, adding more stress. Pick a couple of things that you can accomplish in a day and stick with that list. Finally, having time to ourselves each day is also critical. Find 15 or 20 minutes where you can sit quietly with yourself alone and just relax. Too few of us are taking these critical breaks from the world around us and again, it only adds to the rising stress levels we are all facing. Take the time, make the time - it will make all the difference in the world.

Thank you to Michelle for another wonderful presentation to our club and we look forward to having her with us again - perhaps as a member!
