Clarity Connect has installed their new system and Matthew Dearing and Dale Flinn have been working to get the mailing list for this newsletter up to date and complete. If you are receiving this E-News in error, please be sure to respond directly to the Newsletter Editor, do not use the Reply button. As always, we thank you for your patience.
- Rotary Membership Roster Update In Progress
Scott Heyman announced that the new roster is being put together and copies of the current roster are being circulated at club meetings for the next two weeks to allow members to check the status of their listing and make any additions or corrections. If you are not going to be in attendance over the next couple of weeks, please be sure to contact Scott (Scott.Heyman@ppfa.org) and make sure your information is correct. You will also be hearing from John Ziegler if you do not have a current photo available for the roster. Please make sure that you respond in a timely manner so that we can get the roster published as soon as possible. Also, please be sure that your e-mail address is correct as this will be used for your E-News subscription unless you request otherwise. Thank you all!
- Membership Roster Usage Policy Reminder
A quick reminder to all Rotarians in regard to the roster. The annual membership roster is for the use of members only for non-business purposes. The sale or use of any of the information contained in the roster for commercial purposes is strictly forbidden. This is also true of the list of e-mail addresses for the newsletter. The e-mail list is not used nor is it available for sale or for any commercial use.
- Board of Director Meeting
The Board of Directors met on July 15 and accepted, with regret, the resignations of Bonnie Howell, Charlie Schelah, Ned Dunham, Pat Sayer, and Pat Baxter. Several leaves of absence were granted and several new members were approved. Future board meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce on East Shore Drive. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
- Meeting Location Announcement!
Reminder that on Aug. 27, we will be having an out-of-room experience as we will be meeting at Stewart Park instead of the Holiday Inn. The lunch prices will remain the same - $8.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members and guests - however children will be welcome for half price - $5.00. Reservations will be requested soon, so please mark your calendars and plan ahead for any guests you may wish to invite. Leslie Chatterton, the city's Historic Preservation Planner, will share with us "The History of Stewart Park" as our guest speaker that day. There will also be an ice cream social to follow, with members of the Red Badge Society doing the serving. We will meet in the large pavilion at the park, rain or shine and we hope to see you all there!
- GSE Team Member Search
The following press release is being circulated throughout the district as the search for team members for our upcoming Group Study Exchange with District 9100 in west Africa continues. Anyone who knows of someone who would be qualified and interested in being a part of this team, please take note:
Rotary Clubs Sponsor International Exchange to West Africa
Lansing, NY, July 28, 2003... Regional Rotary Clubs are sponsoring a goodwill visit to Mali, Ghana, Togo and Benin in March and April, 2004. Long-time Rotary member and Cooperstown resident Michael Jerome has been selected to lead a team of visitors as part of the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation. The trip is sponsored by Rotary District 7170 which encompasses an area of central New York ranging from as far west as Ithaca, south to Binghamton and as far north as Richfield Springs. The purpose of the trip is to promote international understanding and goodwill through personal contact.
The Rotary District 7170 is seeking four outstanding young professionals (non-Rotarians) to participant as team members. The program involves a four to six-week visit, during which each member must share personal knowledge of the United States and experience the cultures, vocations and lifestyles of the West African host nations. While abroad, team members will stay in Rotarian's homes, meet their professional counterparts and participate in Rotary Club meetings.
Applicants, from 25 to 40 years of age, must live or work within District 7170, and be employed full-time in a recognized business or profession. The Rotary Foundation provides round-trip air fare and host Rotary Clubs provide meals, lodging and group travel in West Africa. Team members pay personal and incidental expenses.
An application and additional information can be found by clicking on "Group Study Exchange" at www.district7170.org or contact Dale Flinn, Rotary District 7170, 847 Ridge Road, Lansing, NY 14882; email at: bigd@starflinn.com; or call 607-533-4671. Applications are accepted until August 31, 2003.

- Honoring our RI President's Late Wife
Rotarians and friends of Rotary who wish to honor the memory of RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe's wife, Ade, are encouraged to contribute to Ade's Hope Fund for the Education of Women and Children. The special fund within The Rotary Foundation was established shortly after Mrs. Majiyagbe's untimely death on June 6 to commemorate her commitment to the goal of universal literacy and education.
Contributions to Ade's Hope Fund are earmarked within the World Fund to support grants that address the educational needs of women and children. Checks should be made payable to The Rotary Foundation with a notation that the money is for Ade's Hope Fund for the Education of Women and Children. Contributors in the United States should send their gifts to The Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675-5133.
- Rotary Special Guest
This week, three of the four Ithaca High School students that our club sent to the recent RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) conference at Hartwick College joined us to share a little bit about their experience. Each year, our club sends three or four rising seniors from Ithaca High to this conference which helps to develop leadership skills in our youth. Over 80 students gathered at this year's week-long conference.
Our guests today were Maryclaire Abowd, Olga Simkina, and Tim Yang. At the conference, the students are immediately broken up into small work groups and from that point on, take control of the conference themselves. Guest speakers are brought in throughout the week and there is a banquet at the end which is entirely organized by the students. They are also in charge of introducing the guest speakers at the banquet.
Maryclaire, Olga, and Tim shared some of their experiences with us, including the nervousness at making new friends and speaking in front of a large audience. They also spoke to us about the bonds that they formed with the other students there and the trusting relationships that they built through the various activities they enjoyed during the week. Tim, despite having been in the United States for only three years (he came here from China), was given an award for the Most Friendly and Outgoing. Our congratulations to Tim, Olga, and Maryclaire for taking part in this challenging program and our thanks to them for sharing their experiences with us. There will be one more presentation from the fourth student we sponsored in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Ithaca Rotary Membership Committee
|
| This week's program was a two-parter, presented by Membership Committee Chair and Member at Large of your Board of Directors, our own - the stunning, the amazing, the inimitable, the inestimable, the indefatigable, the incredible, the indescribable, the indestructible - Heidi Goldstein!
Part one of our program featured a brief overview of the Membership Committee and its plans and goals for the coming year. Members of the committee spoke briefly about their roles as follows:
Bettsie Park - New member information, including two new handouts to new members. The first, "Your First Acts of Service" which will give new members the protocols for such things as being the introducer, or hosting Happy Dollars, etc. - things that many take for granted, perhaps, but new members may not understand right away without some assistance. The second handout, "So Now That You Have Joined," will help keep new members from becoming RINOs by directly connecting them with committees based on the new members' field of expertise or interest.
Richard Spingarn - Chair of the Classification committee, responsible for assigning classifications to all incoming members and maintaining the master list of classifications within the club - filled, unfilled, and vacated.
Don Kompf - Nobody knows exactly what Don's title is, but his job is to see that new members are moved along in the process in an orderly and efficient manner.
Dave Flinn - In charge of the primary orientation session that all new members are sent to before they make the final commitment to join our club.
Barbara Thuesen - In charge of producing and coordinating a formal induction ceremony to recognize new members as they join our ranks and give them a proper welcome.
Mary-Lynn Cummings - In charge of the Red Badge Society which will be working with the newest members to integrate them successfully into the club and to get them well socialized within the club.
Jane Spano and Dale Flinn are also members of the committee this year.
The second part of the program was a little bit of "Getting to Know You" as each table was asked to answer as series of questions about the members at the table. This was a great way of finding out more about the people we share lunch and fellowship with each week. The last question on the sheets was about goals for the club this year. What do the members feel is the most important goal for our club? Heidi and her committee collected the sheets at the end of the meeting and will be collating the information and using the results to guide both her committee and the board this year. Many thanks to Heidi and all who helped out with this fun and interesting diversion from our usual style of program.
