"Today should be a great day--yesterday a horrific thunderstorm blew throught our camp ground and repositioned our awning! It went from the side of the RV to the roof top very, very fast. Now, it’s on the ground awaiting the trash truck.
Yesterday, I did my first Rotary meeting in nearby Apex, NC. Kelly's son lives here, so I decided it would be a good place to start my "rolling make-up activity". Nice group of members--about 60--who are big promoters of The Rotary Foundation. They are very proud that they are the District leader beating out Chapel Hill and Raleigh (or so says my informant).
We expect to be back in New York State from the July 4 weekend through mid-August. For the most part we have many items to attend to during that time before we head west "for good".
So far we've covered one of my daughters in Downers Grove, IL (Chicago area) and family. We then went to Nauvoo, IL on the Mississippi River where some of our friends live.
Say 'hello' to our leaders.
Peace, Russ & Kelly"

Pres. Jean reported on the recent Board meeting. She thanked the board members for their work in making this a successful year for our club. The chairs of our 4 avenues of service committees, Sue Munson, Tom Sanford, Dale Flinn and Becky Bilderback, have been true leaders. Their willingness to guide the committees and to guide the real work that our club does has been truly extraordinary. Special thanks to Simonetta Antenucci and Scott Russell for their work as Treasurer and Secretary. We reviewed this year's income and expenses and I'm pleased to report that we expect to be within budget for the year. I also want to thank Fred Antil for his service as past-president and George Gull, who serves as Assistant District Governor.
We also agreed to spend some money that we had budgeted for public relations: $250 to support the Fireman's Day on the Commons on September 20. This money will be used for advertising and we will receive credit as a co-sponsor. Another $350 will support two planters for the county's beautification efforts. These are the planters that Chrys Gardener described when she spoke to us about a month ago. They will be placed as part of a group in that traffic triangle barrier at the corner of Route 79, East State Street and Mitchell Street.
This week's Word of the Day is a number, 86, or the slang usage "eighty-sixed." It means to refuse to serve (an unwelcome customer) at a bar or restaurant, or to throw out, or eject.
Where did this phrase come from? Who knows, but here are some options: "86 proof" alcohol; This was the street number of a tavern in New York City where people used to mysteriously disappear from; The Military Justice Article 86 deals with going AWOL.
Do you have a theory of where "Eighty-sixed" came from? Let us know!
