- BOCES Scholarships Awarded
Tony Delucy, the Principal of Career and Technical Center at BOCES announced their recent awards, supported by the critical financial contributions from the five Tompkins County Rotary Clubs, which recognized over 90 students for Career and Technical Recognitions. Tony thanked our Club for our strong support of the BOCES program.
- James L. Gibb Memorial Scholarship Awarded
Millie Clarke-Maynard announced the award of this year's memorial scholarship to Gabriel Galluchi, a senior at Ithaca High School, for his high academic performance, his level of community and school service, and for his efforts in promoting interracial understanding. Gabe will be attending SUNY at Albany and majoring in Business.

The Club also heard from Mary Ann Graham, a James L. Gibb scholarship recipient in 1987, who shared with the club what she has been up to since receiving the award. Mary attended Binghamton University to earn a degree in psychology. Afterwards, she moved back to the Ithaca area, and just recently earned her Master's degree in social work to fulfill her dream to become a social worker. This award has meant a lot to Mary as she was also very close to the Gibb family.

- Ithaca Rotary BBQ Update!
It was a beautiful day for the Rotary BBQ, and the famous ribs sold out in a mere 45 minutes! A special thanks to Don Hinman, Karl Kayser, and Mary Kane Trochim for stepping up to helping out with the rib cooking as Jim Johnston unfortunately had to leave town unexpectedly to be with his father.
Loralyn Light, the Head Chick, reported that the chicken ran out at about 3:30 pm, and we had a great success for the event with many volunteers... almost too many at times! So far, we have a gross income of over $8,200 and a potential to have a net income of well over $5,000, which is fantastic. If you have not yet paid for your tickets please do so soon, or else Siu-ling Chaloemtiarana will be coming after you (and maybe even your house)!
- The District is currently looking for Rotarians to volunteer as a councilor for this year's Ambassadorial Scholars. If you are interested, please contact Peter Brellochs of the Ithaca Sunrise Club.
- New Rotary News Editor and Team
Beginning with the July issue of the Rotary News, Dale Flinn will be stepping up to be your next Rotary Editor and Matthew Dearing will be focusing on developing and maintaining our Rotary web site. John Ziegler will be continuing as our club photographer. Together will be working hard to bring you more timely and efficient Rotary news information, all with lots of pictures to keep you in the action!
- Print Edition to be Discontinued
The Ithaca Rotary News June 2003 print edition will be the final mailing of our club's bi-weekly print newsletter. The Club's Board has decided that we should focus our communications in a more efficient and cost effective method by only distributing the newsletter via e-mail and our website at http://www.ithacarotary.org. Several printed copies of the website version of the newsletter will be available each week at the meeting, but will not be mailed to the membership.
We will be working to make sure that every club member is successfully receiving the Ithaca Rotary News in their e-mail. If you are not currently receiving the news, please sign up right now by sending one blank e-mail to subscriberotary@clarityconnect.com and mdearing@dynamicpatterns.com. Do not put anything in the subject or body of the message, just make sure that the message comes from the e-mail address you want the subscription to be sent to.
If you have any questions or problems regarding the newsletter signup process, please contact Matthew Dearing at mdearing@dynamicpatterns.com
Thank you very much for your cooperation and for helping save some valuable dollars for our Ithaca Rotary Club!

Rotary Members report on origins of "86":
- From Bob Cowie: "When I worked as a soda jerk at Howard Johnson's many years ago, '86' meant we were out of something, for example, 'We're 86 on the vanilla ripple.'"
- Mike Brown provided several discussions from various resources:
"American Heritage Dictionary says 'Perhaps after Chumley's bar and Restaurant at 86 Bedford Street in Greenwich Village, New York City.'
Another site suggests, 'When they started just building bars and houses and apartments pretty much alike, the city code guys would figure all bars were the same, and therefore warranted the same maximum occupancy... you guessed it... 85. Therefore, Mr. 86 was, well, '86'ed.''
Which is dismissed by WordDetective.com:
'The theory you've heard about "86" is certainly entertaining, but is unsubstantiated and probably not true. Fortunately, there are lots of other theories. Unfortunately, there's not much evidence supporting them, either. What we do know is that "86" first appeared as "kitchen slang" meaning "out of that item" in the 1930's, and fairly quickly came to mean "stop serving that customer" as well. Eventually, "86" spread to general usage, where it came to mean simply "dismiss" or "quash" ("The boss 86'ed my proposal for beer in the lunchroom")."

- This week's word is "flocculent", an adjective meaning wooly, In chemistry, a "floc" is a mass formed by the aggregation of a number of fine suspended particles. This word can also be used to describe a person, especially as a more pleasant alternative to the descriptor "bah-ah-ah", as was once used for Pres. Jean by her husband several years ago when a permanent wave turned for the worst.

"Beauty and the Beast Story Tellers"
|
|
Mitch Weiss and Martha Hamilton
|
| Mitch and Martha are a husband-and-wife team known as the Beauty and the Beast Story Tellers. They have been winning audience and critical acclaim since 1980 through the local community, all of the United States, and abroad in Canada and Europe. The duo also focuses on teaching children through school programs the art and skills in storytelling. The author of many books to guide children in their public speaking and acting development, Mitch and Martha are natural teachers--with lots of "ham" to impress on young kids--and are bringing confidence and new skills to our children. |
 |
 |
Three students from local grade schools performed for the club with amazing performances of short stories and fables. The children's expressions and story telling abilities kept the Rotarians enthralled and laughing!
