- Pride
of Workmanship Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the 9th Annual Pride
of Workmanship Awards! Ithaca employers are encouraged to
recognize employees who have displayed positive attitudes,
creativity, and outstanding performance in the workplace.
One of Rotary's main objectives focuses on recognition of
the worthiness of all useful occupations and on high ethical
standards in business and professions. Our Pride of Workmanship
awards have supported this spirit for the past eight years
through 52 individuals and employee teams.
If you are an employer and believe you have an outstanding
worker who is worthy of this award, please complete the
nomination form that you received in the mail, picked up
at Rotary, or online.
Award winners will be selected by a group of seven Ithaca
Rotarians, and the winners' certificates will be presented
at a special luncheon at our regular meeting on April 30.
Feel free to call Tom Sanford at 256-4547 for more information
and mail you forms to Tom at 138 Oakwood Lane, Ithaca, NY
14850.
You may also complete the nomination form online!
- Consider
Your Parking Options for Rotary
Beginning May 1 a brand new parking garage will be erected
directly across from the Holiday Inn. This means that parking
will be limited during construction (about one year), so
you should re-think your parking needs for our weekly meetings.
Car pooling, walking, and coming early might be a wise ideas
to consider.

- Becky
Bilderback introduced our current two-year Ambassadorial
Scholar, Shinichi Oide. Shinichi is from near Tokyo
and is currently in the Plant Pathology department
at Cornell. He spoke to our Club and discussed some
of the differences between the educational systems
in Japan and the United States.

- Nancy
Massicci was happy for Ithaca Youth Hockey, which
brought home a state championship recently!
- Heidi
Goldstein was happy that today’s speaker is her
son!
- George
Kennedy has been away for three and a half months
in Arizona, so he was happy to return to snow.
- Bill
Rusen was thankful that his nephew is now recovering
from a broken leg. He discovered that delivering a
pizza can be a dangerous profession, especially when
having to crossing through a St. Patrick’s Day parade!
- Bob
Miller reminisced to our Rotary meetings back
in the old hotel. One day they were served soup and
the entire table collapsed and sent the soup spilling
right down the middle!
- Barlow
Ware said that our singing of Edelweiss today
reminded him of his homeland of Switzerland. His mother’s
side called von Effinger originally came from Wildegg,
which is about 18 km from Zurich.

"The New Education Director for the Hangar
Theatre"
|
|
Joey
Steinhagen
|
|
Joey
spoke about the extensive education program at the Hangar
Theatre. Their goal is to not only teach students the
experience of theatre, but to also help establish future
generations of audiences. The program supports a touring
group that visits the schools and performs educational
plays, and also “Artists-in-the-Schools” where teaching
artists help to stimulate learning and imagination in
the classroom.
A
very unique program they are now offering is the Empire
State Partnership, a collaboration between the Hangar
Theatre, the Ithaca City School District, and the NY
Council for the Arts. This amazing program brings 4th
grade students the opportunity to participate in creating
and performing an original piece of theatre.

Joey
Steinhagen, Rotary Speaker |
| Every
student will in the district will be involved with this
common experience, and Joey also gave this experience
to Rotarians at our meeting! We had two groups of brave
volunteers take a set of instructions and create and perform
an original bit of theatre. |
 |
 |
| Rotarians
get into the act by writing a performing original theatre
on the spot! |
