  • The New Fair Share Contribution at Ithaca Rotary
With your next dues notice in June, our Board voted unanimously to include a new line item called "Fair Share Contribution ... $40" which will be payable in addition to our regular semiannual dues of $85. Thus the total amount due will now be $125 (twice a year).

Why the new charge and what is its purpose?

Every week it costs the club a certain basic amount just to hold our meeting. Some of that cost is recovered through our luncheon price. Yet there are some Rotarians who do not attend. Others who do attend but do not buy lunch, still cost the club something simply by taking a seat. There has been an attempt to recoup some of these costs by asking those who do not eat to make a voluntary contribution towards our basic meeting costs. It has not been particularly successful, so we are now going to ask all members to participate in the “Fair Share” program.

The "Fair Share" contribution is set at $2 per week, and will be paid in advance. For members attending a meeting, their luncheon price will be reduced by $2 for a net cost of only $8. For members who don't attend, they forfeit their $2. For members who attend, but do not eat, there will be no charge. For guests and Visiting Rotarians, they will continue to pay the regular $10 price. Basically, if you attend our meetings (as we hope you would) you get all of your money back. In recognition of our members busy schedules and the necessity of missing a meeting now & then, the Fair Share Contribution is predicated on a member attending 40 meetings per year (one could miss a meeting a month). If you attend more, you come out ahead. If you attend less, then you have contributed to the cost of running the club.

Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeff True, President Elect.
  • Upcoming Rotary Events: Mark your calendars!

  • Remembering a Rotarian
Ade Majiyagbe, wife of Rotary International President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe, died on June 6, 2003 in England, having suffered a stroke a few weeks earlier. Known and loved throughout the Rotary world for her warmth, good humor, and dedication to Rotary, Ade was very active in Inner Wheel in her homeland of Nigeria and served on the organization's international board of directors. An insurance claims adjuster by profession, Ade also sang in her church choir and enjoyed sewing and fashion design. She is also survived by her son, John.

Condolences may be sent to President-elect Jonathan in care of the President's office at World Headquarters. Memorial contributions in honor of Ade may be made to

The late Ade Majiyagbe, and her husband RI Pres-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe

Ade Majiyagbe was a familiar presence with her husband at RI conventions, the International Assembly, and other meetings. Leading the spouses' session at the 2003 International Assembly, she reinforced her husband's message of addressing the world's most pressing problems, saying: "As privileged people and spouses of Rotarians who are known for humanitarian services, we must team up to give back to society what society gave us. We must Lend a Hand in helping to clothe the naked; Lend a Hand in feeding the poor; Lend a Hand in healing the sick; Lend a Hand in caring for the aged and comforting the bereaved."

"Together with her husband, Ade Majiyagbe served and represented Rotary with devotion and faith," said Gay Maloney, who served as her aide during the 2002-03 Rotary year. "Most of all, I witnessed her commitment to serve those less fortunate throughout the world. Because of her beautiful spirit and selfless nature, she inspired me and all others who had the privilege of knowing her."

  • Greetings from Dave Flinn at the RI Convention in Australia!

"Greetings to all from the International Convention in Brisbane, Australia. The 16,000 folks here are enjoying themselves with good weather, good programs and good fellowship.

All 16,000 or so of us are enjoying mostly good weather, good programs and good fellowship. The change in the weather came last night at the Host Organization entertainment feature "Experience Australia". At the end the skies opened and most of us got pretty soaked returning to our busses.

Among the highlights of the Convention was the announcement yesterday that the Polio Eradication goal has been met and exceeded, to the tune of $88,557,000! There is still a need for more money, though.

Next year's convention will be in Osaka, Japan, and we have already signed up to go with the Hamden, CT. Rotary Tour Group we went with this year, and also to the Singapore Convention a few years ago.

Other District 7170 folks here (and seen) include PDG Leon Horwitz, PDG Marie Lusins, Tom Overbaugh, and Jim High. Our Incoming Governor, Perry Berkowitz, seems to have been hiding, as there have been no reported sightings of him, and the Convention will be over in a few hours.

I'll report more on the convention when I return."

Today's word is "morganatic", and adjective meaning a legal marriage between a person of European royal or noble birth and a partner of lower rank (which is how they always married in Pres. Jean’s family!), in which it is agreed that no titles or estates of the royal or noble partner are to be shared by the partner of inferior rank nor by any of the offspring of the marriage.

"We Believe in You, The Village at Ithaca"

Cal Walker, Associate Director, Learning Strategies Center at Cornell University
Jeff Furman, Ithaca City School Board

The concept that directs the mission of The Village at Ithaca is the African proverb that "It takes a village to raise a child." The organization focuses primarily on African American and Latino students and helping them boost their academic performance. They maintain this racial focus because there are clear data that show these groups of students need additional help in their academic performances.

Although Cal strongly dislikes the idea that a person or group is considered "at risk", he believes that the group most at risk from education gaps across races of students in our local schools is the community. It are these students who are not fully succeeding today, but will be a part of our community in the future.

Jeff Furman presented a video covering the current educational campaign "It Just Takes All of Us". This program will require over 1000 hours of volunteer work, and has the goal of bring all third grader’s to grade reading level within the school year. Because there are so many difficulties that a school district must face, so many of which do not seem to have easy answers, this campaign has set a tangible, doable goal to focus on right now. This little step by raising all students at a specific level to their grade reading level will bring a cascade of future success toward solving the bigger, long-term issues for improving the overall academic success of our students.

About the Speakers: Cal Walker has lived in Ithaca for over 25 years, and is currently the Associate Director of the Learning Strategies Center at Cornell University. A fellow Rotarian, Cal is a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church, serves on board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Tompkins County, founding member of Community Faith Partnership, and recipient of Tompkins Trust Company Award for Excellence.

Jeff Furman came to Ithaca in 1961 to attend Cornell, and later completed a Law and a Business degree at New York University. He returned to Ithaca in 1976 and has remained involved in many community organizations and programs over the years. Currently, Jeff serves on the Ithaca City School Board.
