- Notes from President Jeff
A very special round of applause for our own Beverly Baker who opened up her travel agency 30 years ago today! Happy Anniversary, Beverly!
Special recognition for Rotarians in action - Robin Korherr who won her race for a seat on the Ithaca Common Council - the only contested race in the city!
Also congratulations to Dave Dunlop who will be honored by the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. On National Philanthropy Day, Nov. 14, Dave will be honored as the Professional Fundraiser of the Year. There will be an event at Celebrations which will be open to the public. Congratulations Dave!
- Share the Warmth
The award-winning Share the Warmth Program is getting under way for this year. Dick Page and crew have already made arrangements for collection boxes to be placed at Borg-Warner, Center Ithaca, P&C Markets at East Hill and in Trumansburg, NYSEG (new this year), Pyramid Mall, Tops Market at Triphammer, Wegmans, and Shur-Save in Trumansburg as well as locations on the Ithaca College and Cornell University campuses. The Samaritan Center of Catholic Charities will oversee the distribution and the Southside Community Center has agreed to store the clothes and host the sorting and distribution. Trumansburg Rotary is joining us this year as a co-sponsor of this wonderful event and they are responsible for arranging the two Trumansburg collection sites.
For those of you not familiar with Share the Warmth, this program was originally aimed at college students who might have extra warm clothes laying around in their closets at home. If those clothes were no longer needed, then the students were asked to bring them back with them after the Thanksgiving break and donate them so that local families, and especially children, could have warm clothes for the winter. Since then, the program has expanded to the entire community and many different drop-off locations off campus. The program will begin collecting clothes on November 19 and end December 7. Sorting will take place on December 11 and distribution will be on December 12 and 13. Of course, in order for this program to truly be successful, your participation is required. Sign-up sheets will be available at the meetings and you are welcome to sign up to help empty the collection bins, sort the clothes, or staff the distribution tables. Without your help, this program would not be possible. If you have any questions, please contact Dick Page.
- Spelling Bee Team
Jim Fogel is once again putting together a team for the annual IPEI Spelling Bee at Ithaca High School. Our own queen bee, Jean McPheeters will preside as usual as adult teams from around the county try to spell their way to fame and fortune - or infamy as the case may be. If you are at all inclined to try spelling words in front of a large crowd, please contact Jim. The event takes place on Sunday, Nov. 16, so you have plenty of time to practice!
- Ringing for the Salvation Army
Once again the Ithaca Rotary Club will be ringing bells for the Salvation Army's annual kettle drive. Following are the dates and locations for our days, please check your calendars and be ready to sign up for a time slot when you are asked. Believe it or not, those dates will be here sooner than you think! Mark your calendars now so you have the time set aside.
INSIDE at KMart on Route 13 in Ithaca:
December 1: 9 am - 8 pm
December 16: 9 am - 9 pm
December 17: The kettle will be at our meeting for members who would like to make a donation.
- Please be extra careful when picking up or putting away your name badge next week as the boxes are being rearranged. With all of the comings and goings of members, occasionally it becomes necessary to rearrange the boxes to fit new people in and move past members out. Everyone will be happier knowing who you really are when you pick up your own name badge, and Barlow and Dave will be much happier fellows if you take an extra moment to make sure you put your badge back in its new spot!
- There are now Shut-in cards on the tables each week along with the comment cards. If you know of a fellow Rotarian who is unable to make it to the meeting and would appreciate a visit from a friend, please fill out one of these cards and give it to PJ or Scott Russell.
- Along those lines, Carm Hill has recently undergone open-heart surgery. He is at home now recovering and brief phone calls would be acceptable. Please keep Carm in your thoughts.
- Ithaca Rotary Community Grants
Once again the Ithaca Rotary club will be presenting worthwhile organizations in the community with small grants to help them achieve their goals. Requests for Rotary Grants are now being accepted and any organization with a need can apply simply by making a request to the Small Grants Committee. A letter detailing the request should be sent to either President Jeff True or Secretary Scott Russell care of the Ithaca Rotary Club, P.O. Box 306, Ithaca, N.Y. 14851. Letters may also be addressed directly to the committee via chair Jessie Ripple, 57 Highgate Circle, Ithaca, N.Y. 14850 If you have any questions about the Small Grants Program you may also call Jessie at 257-6454 or 254-2372. Deadline for requests will be January 31, 2004.
- Rochester Rotary's annual Eastern Cities Dinner will take place on Wednesday, November 12 in Rochester, N.Y. Rotary. International President Jonathan Majiyagbe will be the keynote speaker at this wonderful event. Tickets are expected to be $50 per person. If you are interested in attending, see PJ for more information.
- A Special Request
Secretary Scott Russell has received a request from Linda Stalford Harding for any location information on Sharon Loomis and Daniel J. Maier, two students that were sponsored by our club in 1966-67 for a year's exchange in the Netherlands. They were part of a group of seventeen American students selected by RI for the year in Netherlands. Ms. Harding is attempting to organize a reunion of this group, hence the request. Last addresses she has are 792 Ridge Rd, RD 1, Ludlowville for Sharon and 1025 Bostwick Rd., Ithaca for Daniel. Her telephone number is 304-745-4743 and e-mail is lumelover@aol.com.

- New Member Introduction
Dave Flaccus introduced our newest member today, Brenda Dalmida. Brenda was born in Harlem, and grew up in New York, New Jersey, and St. Johns. She earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies at St. Peters College in New Jersey and her master's degree in TESL and Linguistics at Syracuse University. Her teaching and administrative experience started with teaching ESL in Syracuse and from there she went on to be a vice-principal in a middle school in Rochester before coming to Ithaca where she is in her third year as an associate principal at Ithaca High School. Brenda has two daughters - Stephanie who is an eighth grader at Boynton, and Alexandra who is in her second year of pre-med at SUNY Binghamton. For fun and stress relief, Brenda enjoys yoga. Congratulations and welcome to the club, Brenda! We all look forward to meeting you and getting to know you.
- Rotary Foundation Presentation
Janet Steiner introduced us to our newest Paul Harris Fellow, Percy Browning. Through her generous support of the Rotary Foundation, Percy has helped to enrich the lives of many people around the world whom she will never meet. The educational and humanitarian programs of the Rotary Foundation rely upon the generosity of people like Percy to support their mission of promoting world peace and understanding. Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange, and Matching Grants are just a few of the programs that are part of the Rotary Foundation. In memory of our founder, Paul Harris Fellowships are awarded to persons who have donated a minimum of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. In recognition of this important achievement, Percy received the pin, the medal, and the certificate that the Rotary Foundation presents to each Paul Harris Fellow. Our congratulations and sincerest thanks to Percy for her dedication and for her continuing support of the Rotary Foundation!

"How Physical Fitness Relates to Cancer"
|
|
Denise Heimlich
|
|
June Losurdo introduced our speaker for today, Denise Heimlich who is the Program Coordinator for the Cornell University Wellness Program and the supervisor for the Senior Fitness Program for Cornell retirees. She is also a breast cancer survivor.
Denise spoke to us today about the correlation between physical fitness and cancer, both from a statistical and a personal point of view. More and more research is finding that people who maintain good exercise habits and physical fitness are better able to deal with the rigors of the various treatments surrounding a cancer diagnosis. Whether it is the stress of multiple surgeries or radiation and chemotherapy, people who are in good shape before they are diagnosed with cancer seem to hold up better during treatment, recover faster from surgery, and live longer.
|
 |
When faced with multiple surgeries within a five month period, Denise herself is confident that her generally high level of fitness allowed her to return to work earlier and to heal faster than if she had not been so fit. Aside from physical fitness, Denise also talked to us a little bit about mental fitness. There is a growing collection of studies that are connecting positive mental energy with improved physical outcomes, although no specific links or proof has really been found yet. In some cases, though, mental fitness seems to be the only difference in a successful outcome.
What can we do? Get fit, of course! Read informative brochures like the American Cancer Society's "Living Smart" eating and health guide which Denise thoughtfully brought along to share with us. Improve your exercise and eating habits and, should you ever be faced with a life-threatening disease like cancer, you will be better prepared for the stress and, in most cases, more likely to survive. There are many other programs and resources available throughout the community to help us all live healthier lives, all we need to do is try! Our thanks to Denise for her informative talk and for spending some time with us.

- Special Guest
Our special guest this week was Illa Burbank who is one of the organizers of Box Tops Ithaca, a local effort to help raise money for our schools and ease the burden on the tax payers. This program, Box Tops for Education, is sponsored by General Mills who will donate ten cents for every box top it receives to school districts around the country.
Illa, and her partner Ally Rooks, are coordinating a local campaign that is benefitting Ithaca City Schools and Montessori schools. Collection sites have been established throughout the city and at Cornell and Ithaca College. In addition, several local employers have established collection sites. For a complete list of products that carry the special Box Tops for Education labels, box-top collection sites, and more information about the program, you can visit their web site at www.BoxTopsIthaca.com or e-mail Illa at IBurbank@twcny.rr.com Our thanks to Illa for sharing this interesting program with us.
