- Notes from PJ
President Jeff recognized several Rotarians in action recently...
Last Tuesday's Ithaca Journal featured the Rotary Youth Soccer program. Several photos with the article showed some of the kids participating in the program wearing their reversible Rotary jerseys. Our club co-sponsors this great program along with the Ithaca Sunrise club and the Ithaca Youth Bureau.
Special recognition for: cameo appearances by past presidents Bob Gravani and George Gull; Jack Burns, a member of this club for 48 years, who recently retired from the real estate business after some 30 years.
From the Ithaca Times Best of issue, congratulations to: Casey Stevens - Best Radio Show; Will Cooke - Best Place to buy a New Car; a list of best new job opportunities for Alan Cohen, and our own Becky Bilderback was in one of the photos included with the article.
PJ also shared with us a letter that appeared in the Dear Abby column recently reminding Abby that the Four Way Test of Rotary is a great guide for all people to use in their daily lives.
- Polio Eradication Update
Perri LoPinto and Gene Erickson, our co-chairs for last year's Polio Eradication campaign, gave us an update on the international effort to finally rid the earth of this devastating disease. Rotary's goal for this campaign was to raise $80 million. Our club was, with guidance and help from Perri, Gene, Dave Dunlop, and Phil Meyer, raised more than $51,000. Worldwide, Rotary's campaign has raised $111 million. Perri and Gene also introduced all of the members of our club who, through their contribution or pledge to the Polio Eradication campaign, have achieved the level or next level of a Paul Harris Fellowship. The complete list of donors was also on all of the tables. Our sincere thanks to Perri, Phil, Gene, and Dave for their efforts and especially to all of the members of the club who are helping to make the Rotary dream of a world free from polio a reality.
- Red Cross and Measles
President Jeff has information from the International Red Cross about a program they are starting aimed at eliminating measles. Patterned after Rotary's Polio Eradication campaign, the Red Cross program will be starting in Africa. If you would like to learn more about this program, see Jeff.
- Ithaca Rotary Pancake Day on November 4
Ithaca Rotary's annual Pancake Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 4 at the Women's Community Building. Once again we will be serving pancakes, eggs, etc. to the masses from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. All members will be asked to sell tickets and to sign up to help out during the day. Sign-up sheet will be at the next couple of meetings. This event counts as a make-up meeting and is a great opportunity to share some fellowship with Rotarians from our club as well as the Ithaca-Cayuga club and the Ithaca Sunrise club. It's a lot of fun, don't miss out! The best shifts go first, so sign up early and often. If you would like to place an advertisement on the Pancake Day placemat, spaces are available for $75 each. Please see President Jeff if you would like to place an ad.
- Spelling Bee Team
Jim Fogel is once again putting together a team for the annual IPEI Spelling Bee at Ithaca High School. Our own queen bee, Jean McPheeters will preside as usual as adult teams from around the county try to spell their way to fame and fortune - or infamy as the case may be. If you are at all inclined to try spelling words in front of a large crowd, please contact Jim. The event takes place on Sunday, Nov. 16, so you have plenty of time to practice!
- Ithaca Sunrise Club Spaghetti Dinner
Kathy Larson from the Ithaca Sunrise club invited us all to their annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, October 24. The all-you-can-eat dinner will be served at the Ithaca High School cafeteria from 5:00 - 7:30. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children, and under 5 eat free. You may purchase tickets at the door - takeout is also available - or someone from the Sunrise club will be at our meeting next week with tickets. This is a big fund-raiser for the Sunrise club, the food is great, and there is also live entertainment! Hard to beat for the price.
- Ringing for the Salvation Army
Once again the Ithaca Rotary Club will be ringing bells for the Salvation Army's annual kettle drive. Following are the dates and locations for our days, please check your calendars and be ready to sign up for a time slot when you are asked. Believe it or not, those dates will be here sooner than you think! Mark your calendars now so you have the time set aside.
INSIDE at KMart on Route 13 in Ithaca: December 1 from 9 am - 8 pm and December 16 from 9 am - 9 pm. On December 17, the kettle will be at our meeting for members who would like to make a donation.
- There are now Shut-in cards on the tables each week along with the comment cards. If you know of a fellow Rotarian who is unable to make it to the meeting and would appreciate a visit from a friend, please fill out one of these cards and give it to PJ or Scott Russell.
- Ithaca Rotary Community Grants
Once again the Ithaca Rotary club will be presenting worthwhile organizations in the community with small grants to help them achieve their goals. Requests for Rotary Grants are now being accepted and any organization with a need can apply simply by making a request to the Small Grants Committee. A letter detailing the request should be sent to either President Jeff True or Secretary Scott Russell care of the Ithaca Rotary Club, P.O. Box 306, Ithaca, N.Y. 14851. Dave Flaccus nominated Brenda Dalmida for membership in our club. His nomination was seconded and approved by the members present. Congratulations to Brenda and we look forward to having her join us soon.
- New Member Introduction
Larry Baum introduced our newest member, Neil Tarallo. Neil is an Ithaca College and Syracuse University graduate and is currently the owner of Ithaca Photo. Neil took over the business from his father Dominic, a long-time member of the Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary club. Neil also teaches part-time at Syracuse. We welcome Neil to our club and look forward to getting to know him. Congratulations Neil and thank you Larry!
- Paul Harris Presentation
|
Janet Steiner introduced our newest Paul Harris Fellow today. Dick Page has, through his generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation, reached the first level of a Paul Harris Fellow and was given the pin, medal, and certificate in recognition of his contributions. Because of his commitment to the Rotary Foundation, Dick has helped make possible the continuation of important programs such as Group Study Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholarships, and Matching Grants. These programs and more are the heart of the Rotary Foundation's mission to promote world peace and understanding. Dick's support of the Foundation and these programs is greatly appreciated by the Foundation and the many people around the world who will benefit from his generosity. Our sincerest thanks to Dick for his contributions and congratulations on achieving Paul Harris Fellowship.

"The New Cornell Medical School in Qatar"
|
|
Dr. David Robertshaw
|
| Ted Hendricks introduced our guest speaker for today, Dr. David Robertshaw from the Cornell Medical School. David is the director of Cornell's new program in Doha, Qatar. He gave us a tour of the magnificent facility that was built for the school by the Emir of Qatar as part of his new educational "city." Other American schools have programs there in other areas of education as well. Students in the new program are mostly from the Middle East, but are representative of a larger community as some of them are the children of expatriates in Qatar. Most of the classes are actually taught here in Ithaca, but they are either taped and re-broadcast to the students in Qatar or, in some cases, broadcast live from Ithaca using broadband computer connections.
David showed us photos of the campus, lecture halls, and laboratories. Another of the unique aspects of the school is their use of a distributed, electronic library. Computer terminals placed throughout the campus are the primary access points to library resources for the students and faculty.
Our thanks to David for an inside look at a wonderful new program and for taking the time to share his thoughts and experiences with us.
