  • Route 13 Clean-up
The fall Highway Clean-up Day is coming up on Saturday, October 4. The crew will meet at the Tops at Triphammer at 8:30 and begin to work down Route 13 towards Stewart Park. Once again we hope to have volunteers join us from Onsite Volunteers and we will try to get the entire stretch done in one outing. Noel Desch will have sign-up sheets available next week, please come and help make our neighborhood a little nicer! There will be a second day on October 11 if necessary.
  • Ithaca Rotary's Annual Pancake Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 4 at the Women's Community Building. Once again we will be serving pancakes, eggs, etc. to the masses from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. All members will be asked to sell tickets and to sign up to help out during the day. Sign-up sheets will be available soon. This event counts as a make-up meeting and is a great opportunity to share some fellowship with Rotarians from our club as well as the Ithaca-Cayuga club and the Ithaca Sunrise club. It's a lot of fun, don't miss out! The best shifts go first, so sign up early and often.
  • PPJ is in charge of the nominating committee this year and will be looking for some assistance in choosing the future leadership of our club. By definition, the committee consists of at least three past presidents and two members at large. Those at-large members can not be currently serving on the club's board of directors. If you have any interest in serving on this committee, please see PPJ as they will start meeting soon. The election of new officers takes place at our annual meeting which is the last regular meeting in December.
  • Rochester Rotary's annual Eastern Cities Dinner will take place on Wednesday, November 12 in Rochester, N.Y. Rotary International President Jonathan Majiyagbe will be the keynote speaker at this wonderful event. Tickets are expected to be $50 per person. If you are interested in attending, see PJ for more information.
  • "How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me," with nationally acclaimed author Susan Blauner will be featured at the 34th annual meeting of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service. If depression or suicide has touched your life, this program will be meaningful, helpful, and inspirational for you. The meeting will be held on Sunday, October 19, in the First Baptist Church at DeWitt Park, following the Jack Lewis Award at 4pm.
  • An Open House to view the new Sidney Tamarin training and resource center will be held just before the annual meeting, from 3-4pm. The Center is just across the street from the church, at 124 East Court Street. For more information and registration, contact Rotarian Nancy Rosen at 272-1505.

  • New Member Introduction
PJ introduced our newest member today, Barbara Eckstrom. Barbara is the Director of the County Solid Waste Division where she has worked for the past 15 years. She and her husband Dean have two daughters and Barbara closely follows high school sports. Her other hobbies include gardening and enjoying her hot tub.Welcome to our club, Barbara, we look forward to getting to know you. Please make Barbara feel at home in our club when you meet her.
  • Special Guest
As part of our continuing program of guest speakers from Ithaca High School, today we welcomed to our club Mr. Kobina Ansah. Kobina was born in Canada and moved to Ithaca in the early 90's when his father was transferred here for work. In the summer of 1994 he and his mother and brother spent several months in Ghana, home to his grandparents. There he began to really appreciate all the we have here in the United States.
Since that summer, he has been back to Ghana twice. This fall, Kobina is a senior at Ithaca High School where he has rowed on the crwe team, studied the piano, been a member of the Tech Club, and worked with several extra-curricular groups. In his church, he sings with the choir and was given the responsibility of keeping track of the money in a fundraising program there, his first experience handling money for someone else. Kobina is planning to further his education in either mechanical engineering or hotel management.

In whatever field he chooses, we are certain from his presentation to us that he will be successful. Our sincere thanks to Kobina and his father George for being with us this week and for sharing.

  • Ted Hendricks $22 for approximately 10 cents per mile for a recent adventure he and his wife Peg undertook that led them back and forth across the state of New Jersey. As Ted did not elaborate any further, you'll have to inquire of him for details - such as means of transportation perhaps!
  • Bill Cowdery one for Barbara Romano who has spearheaded the discussions with the Holiday Inn that have resulted in a much-improved menu the past few weeks. PJ added that Dalene Covert from the Holiday Inn has also been a big help in these changes.
  • Judy Pastel two for Kobina and his father - two great examples of the kind of kids in our schools and the people in our community.
  • Dave Flinn one for Warren Allmon and the imminent opening of the new Museum of the Earth at PRI.
  • Warren Allmon again, this time for real, $100 for their new stuffed dinosaur, the Ithaca Journal, the Ithaca Times, and Ithaca in general where he and his wife love to live and plan to stay for a very long time!

"Living Downstream"

Sandra Steingraber

Our guest speaker today was Sandra Steingraber, a poet, ecologist, speaker, cancer survivor, scientist, and writer - though not necessarily in that order. Sandra has been in the Ithaca area for a while, first at Cornell and now in a new position at IC where she is studying the effects of early childhood exposure to toxins on the development of Parkinson's Dimensia in the elderly.

Her battle with bladder cancer in college started her on a journey that has brought her through many different fields of study and interest, inspiring her initially to add an English creative writing major to her biology major. It also served as the inspiration for her study of the links between cancer and the environment. Along the way she has spoken to a very diverse group of people, from fashion designers (working on fabrics that don't require dry cleaning and its toxic fluids) to football players (who may be playing on fields recently sprayed with chemicals) to firefighters (who must face an increasing array of burning synthetic materials and the gases or smoke they give off when burning).

When she became a mother for the first time almost exactly 5 years ago, she was inspired to look into the field of fetal toxicology and how chemicals from the environment can impact babies even in the womb. And, as if all that research was not enough, along with the speaking and consulting, Sandra has also published several books related to her research.

Whew! A very busy woman with a very interesting life. It was a great pleasure to have her spend some of her time with us and we thank her very much for her time and her interesting presentation.
